Greenhouse managers have a few options at their disposal when it comes to cooling their area. Some of these include chillers and geothermal heating systems. While these methods tend to produce the desired results, experienced greenhouse managers consider the cost of buying and maintaining the equipment outweighs the effect that they provide. As is the case with most management practices, it’s best to start with low cost, low labor cooling method. By mindfully ventilating the greenhouse and keeping the air circulating, greenhouse managers can maintain an ideal temperature within their structure. Managers should note that each cooling method comes with its own set of tradeoffs and limits. While this doesn’t mean that any particular cooling method isn’t necessarily worth using, it does mean that greenhouse managers have the responsibility of testing custom cooling solutions within their structure until the optimal interior temperature is achieved.
Keep Specific Greenhouse Needs in Mind
It’s important for greenhouse managers to keep in mind the fact that a structure’s cooling needs depends entirely on its orientation, location, and type. All heating and cooling measures should be implemented with the structure’s specific dimensions and geography in mind.
Evaporative cooling can be a viable, cost-effective solution for greenhouse managers depending on the level of humidity that they’re trying to maintain. Pads for cooling walls can be easily purchased online, and managers can construct their own wall using 2 X 4’s, some PVC, and a sump tank.
Shade curtains or shade cloths can lower temperatures in a greenhouse by as much as 10 degrees. On top of that, these cooling tools are quite affordable. However, the tradeoff with using shade cloths is that greenhouse managers will have to account for the cloths when lowering temperatures. Aside from that, they’ll have to consider the light being blocked from the shade cloths in their production.
Circulation (Through Fans)
Circulating fans are a go-to operating tool for any respectable grower. These keep the air flow within a greenhouse moving in order to maximize gas exchange and keep the temperature at a consistent level. Additionally, circulating fans keep cool air down while pushing warm air out.
